Happy(ier) Job Hunting From Home

It's so easy to fall face first into a funk when looking for employment. And yes, we all know it’s not unlike dating, with the constant courting, showing a little leg here and there, wondering if the phone will ring. But allow me to introduce you to a few otherwise overlooked points of job hunting – ones that may help break up the day and enable you to see this necessary evil as more fun than previously thought.

  1. Snacks! No unruly vending machines here, just unrestricted access to all the refined sugar you want. What could go wrong?

  2. Tea/coffee on-demand; no more waiting for the person who drained the pot to make another (which is right around NEVER o’clock). Also, no more post-3 p.m. shaming about having that 8th cuppa – who cares? No one! Also great for those mid-morning, early-afternoon, mid-day, almost dinnertime, technically tea-time pick-me-ups. All. Dddday. Lllllong.

  3. No lines for the bathroom. Ever. And it’s a good thing, with all that coffee/tea you’re drinking.

  4. Quality time with all your favorite 3rd connections on LinkedIn. They see you seeing them. And now you see them seeing you. This wonderful kaleidoscope provides hours of entertainment without actually doing anything.

  5. Netflix: giving new meaning to “daytime television” across the unemployed landscape. No more hokey game shows at 10 a.m. No ma’am. Get your GOT, OITNB, old episodes of Seinfeld, Lost, and every other show you may/may not need to lower your standards to watch, served piping hot throughout what would otherwise be a workday.

  6. Naps! No more trying to fit under your desk or act like you went out when really you spent a half hour in the data closet “gathering your thoughts.”

And while this list is obviously not exhaustive, perhaps it will serve as a little party hat as you happily forge strategic partnerships while self-starting and working hard at adding value to a team and fostering a culture of success.
